B.C.'s Olympic cauldron will be relit during Sochi Games
Vancouver's Olympic flame will flare again on the last day of the Sochi Winter Olympics, if not before, says the minister responsible.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone said Wednesday the plan by PavCo, the corporation in charge of the downtown convention centre, is to light the natural gas-fired flames on the last day. But he has inquired of PavCo whether it can be done earlier.
"It could cost a couple of hundred thousand dollars to light it through the entire Olympics," Stone told reporters at the B.C. legislature.
He said one option would be to look for private sector sponsorship to light up the symbol of the 2010 Olympics.
"The reality is that British Columbians want to celebrate," Stone said. "We're right up there at the top of the medal standings, and a lot of those athletes are British Columbians."
CTV reported Wednesday afternoon that the cauldron will be lit tonight.
