RCMP: bait sleds coming to Revelstoke; two snowmobiles stolen from Peaks Lodge
A pick-up truck with two snowmobiles on it was stolen from the Peaks Lodge sometime early Friday morning.
Revelstoke RCMP say that sometime after 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 6, someone stole a white Ford F-350 with two snowmobiles that were in the bed of the truck from the Peaks Lodge west of Revelstoke.
The stolen snowmobiles were described as a 2013 Polaris 800 RMK and an Arctic Cat M8.
This is the third theft of this type in Revelstoke in the past month. On Nov. 12, thieves made off with two trucks and three snowmobiles in two different thefts in the Southside neighbourhood. The trucks were recovered but the snowmobiles never were.
"Revelstoke RCMP are encouraging sledders to park your vehicles in a well-lit area, disable your two vehicle at night and securely lock all your equipment," said Cpl. Thomas Blakney in a news release.
RCMP plan bait sled program for Revelstoke
Revelstoke RCMP spokesperson Cpl Thomas Blakney confirmed that RCMP in Kelowna, Revelstoke and Sicamous are partnering together on a bait sled program.
The program was originally scheduled to be unveiled in Kelowna this week, but has been delayed, likely until next week.
The program is modelled on the bait car system. Police tempt thieves with desirable vehicles to steal, then apprehend and prosecute them with the assistance of on-board surveillance equipment.
Provincial police have bait snowmobiles, ATVS, trailers and watercraft in their bait car program.
Police plan to target thieves during the early morning hours when most thefts occur.
