A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the West Columbia area, which includes Revelstoke.

Environment Canada issues the alert shortly before 10 a.m. on Friday. It warns that a severe thunderstorm with "large hail and damaging winds" is possible for this afternoon.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon over sections of the Columbias and Kootenays," Environment Canada reports. "There is the potential that some of these thunderstorms may become severe. These severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing heavy downpours and large hail."

The warning urges people to monitor weather conditions and to take safety precautions if threatening weather approaches.
