Massive transformers on the way to Mica
Four giant transformers set for installation at Mica Dam are on their way through Revelstoke this week.
Four out of seven transformers set for use at the dam arrived in Revelstoke on Sunday, Nov. 3, transported here by train from Quebec. However, it will require careful planning to transport the massive machines the 150 kilometres from the CP Rail yard to Mica Dam, says BC Hydro's Jen Walker-Larsen.
The trailer used to carry the transformers up Highway 23 North has 96 tires and can carry a 175-tonne load. There will be lane closures during the move and motorists are asked to use caution.
Each transformer is about four metres tall, three metres wide and five metres deep. They weight about 106 tonnes each.
They were manufactured by ABB in Varennes, Quebec. They consist of electrical core inside steel tanks, with many layers of copper windings.
The transformers will take the electricity generated by Units 5 and 6 at Mica Dam and convert it to a transmission voltage of 500 kilovolts.
Unit 5 is expected to be operational in 2014 and Unit 6 in 2015.
