Tangiers River Valley wildfire largest locally in slow fire season

Lightning has touched off eleven wildfires in the Revelstoke area since Monday, but most of them are out and the others are of little concern to fire officials.

Southeast Fire Centre information officer Karlie Shaughnessy said the largest to date is a 7.8-hectare fire in the Tangiers River Valley north of Albert Canyon between Mount Revelstoke National Park and Glacier National Park. The fire is located in "extremely difficult and unsafe" terrain, so fire crews are just keeping an eye on it at this point.

The lightning storm on the evening of Aug. 23 started a small spot fire in the Jordan River area. Fire officials are planning to rappel a crew in when winds die down.

Shaughnessy said none of the remaining fires are threatening any structures.

Rain and colder temperatures are forecast in the coming week, putting a damper on fire conditions — any wood smoke smell may be your neighbour starting up their wood stove for the fall season.
