Teachers to rally in Revelstoke on Wednesday
Members of Revelstoke Teachers' Association (RTA) will be rallying in Grizzly Plaza on Wednesday, June 19 to protest the provincial government's Education Improvement Act, or Bill 22.
“Bill 22 allows the provincial government to eliminate the Charter-protected right of teachers to participate in full collective bargaining," said RTA president Bill MacFarlane.
He said the legislation amounts to the government imposing a contract instead of negotiating one. “It also predetermines the outcome of mediation because of the requirement outlined in the legislation that the mediator is required to ensure that that BC Public School Employers' Association concessions on seniority, layoff and recall, evaluation and dismissal, and teachers’ professional autonomy are addressed in a collective agreement,” MacFarlane said.
The RTA is encouraging members to the public to attend the rally, which starts at 4 p.m. and runs for an hour.
