Update: Victim of car crash near Sicamous identified as Michelle Jones
A Revelstoke youth has died after a two vehicle collision south of Sicamous Thursday afternoon, RCMP said.
Michelle Jones, 18, was the passenger in a mid-sized car that was travelling southboung on Highway 97A, 20 kilometres south of Sicamous, at around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 16. The driver of the car lost control on a slippery section of road and slid sideways into the path of an oncoming suburban.
The driver of the suburban attempted to avoid the collision but was not able to do so and ended up hitting the passenger side of the other car.
There were four people involved in the crash – two in each vehicle – and all were taken to Shuswap Lake General Hospital with undetermined injuries. All four people involved were from Revelstoke, RCMP said.
It was there that Jones died from her injuries. The condition of the other people involved in the crash was not known as of press time.
Following news of Jones’ passing a memorial book signing was set up at the community centre Friday evening. A group of her friends were gathered and a book was set up for people to sign messages to Jones.
“Michelle was the most caring person I knew,” said her friend Christina Hui. “She was always there if you needed to talk or needed someone to listen to you.
“I think I speak for everyone when I say we’re really going to miss her so much.”
The RCMP said it is continuing to investigate the collision. While police did not release the victim's identity, the Times Review contacted the victim's family and received permission to do so.
